A Slice of Phovezila

A collection of Legerian short stories that take place in Phovezila.

Magic Bicycle #

By Michael Daffern

I really think the best way to get around Phovezila is by bicycle! Yeah, the cobblestone streets are bumpy and I have to weave through unsuspecting pedestrians, but feeling the magic-charged wind blowing through my hair is something else. Bikes are a new invention from Destral, so most folks have never seen one before. Some are folks are startled, kids usually watch excitedly, and the occasional old wizard grumbles under his breath. But I don't mind! When I reach my destination, I cast a quick spell and vanish my bike in a sparkle of blue light! No need to lock it up or anything. I'm not the best spellcaster around, but I'm pretty proud that I can do that!

The Coin #

By Michael Daffern

It's pouring rain. A shady man leans against the stone-brick wall of an establishment, with a high-collared trench coat and a hat tilted low. Lit only by the dim orange glow of a nearby window, and the occasional flash of lightning... Why is he here?

In his right hand he fidgets with a Phovezilan mark; rolling the emerald green coin over his knuckles. Back and forth, back and forth.

He twists the coin between his finger and thumb, splitting it into five sapphire marks in a burst of magic. He plays with them, then snaps them back together. Again and again. What nefarious business could he be waiting for?

With a ding of a bell, the shop door opens, and a young woman comes out. She hands him a steaming hot chocolate to go... and he hands her three sapphire marks. He smiles and walks off...

Maybe I misjudged him.
